Massage Therapy

woman getting a sholder massageWhile you may look at massage as a luxurious spa service to indulge in once or twice a year or on special occasions, massage offers an array of potential healing benefits for body, mind and spirit.

Some Benefits of Massage

While massage feels fantastic, it’s also associated with an array of benefits:

  • Decreases pain
  • Relieves stress
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Enhances sleep
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Fosters relaxation

A Complement to Chiropractic

Massage is an excellent complement to chiropractic. Getting a massage before or after a chiropractic adjustment can help your body assimilate the adjustment more smoothly. It also can help the adjustment hold longer.

Conditions That Massage May Address

While massage doesn’t cure anything, it may assist with sporting performance and injury recovery.

The following conditions may improve with massage:

  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia

  • Injuries
  • Knee pain
  • Neck pain

FAQ

What should I expect during my initial massage session?

We will have you complete an intake form that will outline your health history. Sharon will review and go over anything specific with you regarding your overall wellbeing and purpose for seeking therapeutic massage.

Where will I have my massage?

Your massage session will take place in a comfortable and quiet room. Soft music will be playing to promote relaxation. You will lie on a massage table that’s designed for your complete comfort.

What do I wear during the massage?

Depending on the primary technique Sharon uses, you may or may not need to remove some of your clothing. If you’re getting a full body massage, most people will undress to their underwear and will be covered with fresh linen. Rest assured that Sharon will give you privacy to undress and ensure you are comfortable.

Will the massage hurt?

An effective massage, even a deep tissue massage, should never be painful. Any discomfort can indicate that the muscle is injured or inflamed; if it is, pressure can be adjusted. In addition, pain can cause you to tighten up and counteract the relaxing effects of the massage. It’s important to note that the most effective massage works with your body’s natural response, not against it.

How will I feel after a massage?

As Sharon applies firm pressure for deep tissue massage, you may feel slightly achy afterwards, but she considers it a “good ache” like you would experience after a workout at the gym. Many clients also feel relaxed and calm afterwards. Clients often feel as if they’re on Cloud Nine after their sessions!

How often should I get a massage?

Frequency of massage varies from person to person. If you are just seeking occasional relaxation, then a session every 3 to 6 weeks may be ideal for you. However, if you are looking to address a particular condition, then it’s advisable to go more frequently at first. Then, you can slowly reduce your visits to a maintenance schedule. You can discuss with Sharon how frequently you should come in based on your goals and condition.

How many sessions will I need?

As each person has a unique condition, their ability to heal and recover from injury or tension will differ. Depending on the goals you’re seeking to achieve through massage, Sharon will discuss with you some options to maximise your sessions.

Can I talk during my session?

Sure, you can if you’d like to. The important thing to remember is that the massage is all about you feeling relaxed and enjoying the experience. Many therapists discourage talking with the hope that clients will feel completely relaxed. Some people prefer to begin their session talking and as the massage progresses, enter a tranquil state of relaxation.
